Volkswagen MQB Slip Ring / Steering Column Electronics Repair

We recently had a Volkswagen Group vehicle arrive with a collection of faults:

  • Airbag warning light illuminated
  • Horn inoperative
  • Multifunction steering wheel buttons not working
  • Driver assistance system warnings displayed

On MQB-platform vehicles (Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Škoda), these symptoms often point towards a fault within the slip ring assembly, which is integrated into the steering column electronics module.

The Problem

We have been repairing these units for years and have found earlier versions much easier but later versions are still repairable. The ribbon cable breaks, this connector was socketed into the steering column electronics PCB, allowing replacement of the ribbon assembly with minimal disassembly. Later revisions are less repair-friendly. The ribbon cable connector is now soldered directly to the circuit board inside the steering column electronics module requiring further dismantling and PCB soldering.

The repair requires:

  • Removal of Airbag, Steering wheel, column trims and the steering column electronics.
  • Careful dismantling of the slip ring assembly.
  • De-soldering components.
  • Repair of the connector and ribbon cable
  • Reassembly and testing

A brand-new steering column electronics/slip ring assembly currently costs around £465 (6/2026), plus labour for replacement and coding.

The Repair

The plastic housing has multiple components that unclip to expose the ribbon cable and circuit board. The ribbon cable is trimmed at it’s broken end and copper exposed which is tinned with solder. The circuit board is removed and the connector to be reattached to the ribbon cable is de-soldered from the main board.

The broken copper tracks are removed and terminals tinned. the cable is then soldered to the connector and secured with epoxy for strain relief.

The photos below show various stages of the repair, including the damaged connector, preparation of the replacement assembly and the completed repair before reassembly.

Benefits of repair over replacement

Many workshops will understandably recommend replacement of the complete steering column electronics module because Volkswagen do not supply these internal components separately.

However, when the fault is limited to the ribbon cable connection, component-level repair can often restore full operation while avoiding the cost of a complete module replacement. Due to the fragile nature of ribbon cables, these require repair by a tech with experience in electronics repair.

In this case, the customer avoided the expense of a new £465 steering column electronics assembly and retained the original coded module.

Common Symptoms of Slip Ring Failure

If your vehicle develops any combination of the following faults, the ribbon cable has most likely broken.

  • Airbag warning light
  • Horn not working
  • Steering wheel buttons inoperative
  • Adaptive cruise control warnings
  • Lane assist warnings
  • Driver assist system faults

Diagnosis is essential before replacing parts. These symptoms can also be caused by wiring faults, steering wheel electronics issues or control module faults.

In the past we’d send electronics repairs to an electronics specialist but with research and experience there are now many repairs we can carry out and turn around same day. DQ200, DQ381, DQ500 DSG repairs, and other control module repairs which avoids the usual delay in posting a parts and having to wait for repair and return for refitting.
